After mitral valve repair surgery, the patient is moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) to recover. After the patient is stabilized in the ICU (approximately 1 day), the person is transferred to the cardiac surgery ward until ready to go home (approximately 4 days). Once home, activities are gradually increased. Your surgeon will discuss when to increase activities. The complete recovery time after mitral valve repair surgery may take 3 to 6 months.
